Beach-to-Beach Cat Sailing in the Southern Cays
|Under the Sun
||camping, tourist hotels
The Route: A spray-filled week of island hopping among the thousands of white-sand specks south of Ambergris Cay. You’ll skipper two-person, 18-foot catamarans between overnights in rustic thatch beach lodges.
When to go: Year-round
Travel advisory: No sailing experience is required, but nonsailors should be quick learners with a no-fear attitude. If you’d rather steer smaller, solo craft, go with Island Expeditions and pilot sail-equipped sea kayaks along the same barrier reef.
- Seeing your shadow flit over the coral below as your catamaran skims along on one hull at 18 knots.
- If you go without a pal, getting stuck with a coskipper you can’t abide.
