Small outfitters for water play in Belize
Question: Do you know of any small outfitters or sailboat operators in Belize that conduct sea-kayaking and camping excursions along the coral atolls? I’m looking for a local operator, not one of the flashy scuba-diving luxo yachts, and hope with your connections you might be able to get some connection for me. I’d like to be in Belize in March.

Adventure Adviser: Funny you should ask. I’ve been researching Belize for my own vacation, with an eye toward sea kayaking in the atolls. By far, the best option I’ve turned up is Slickrock Adventures’s six- or 10-day kayaking adventure on Glover’s Reef Atoll, about 70 miles from Belize City. Instead of camping, however, you’d stay in rustic,
thatched cabañas at their Long Caye Base Camp, an arrangement that gives you more freedom than you’d find on standard group trips.

After taking a charter boat from Belize City on the first day, you’d spend the next day becoming familiar with the kayaks and paddling to a nearby reef for snorkeling. From there on out, your day’s activities are up to you: Either go with the guide on a half-mile to 6-mile paddle to nearby islands and reefs, head out with fishing guides, windsurf, snorkel off the beach, or
head down to the fully equipped dive shop on the other end of the island; one of the Caribbean’s best dive sites, The Wall, is an easy swim from base camp.

All meals (served family-style), accommodations, and instruction are included in the $950-$1,495 price; diving is extra. Trips run from January through the end of April, and then again in December. Call 800-390-5715 for more information.
