Squish the squash at Punkin’ Chunkin’
Question: Do you know anything about the Punkin’ Chunkin’ pumpkin-shooting championships held in the fall in Delaware? We want to enter.

It’s not Halloween,
it’s the Punkin’ Chunkin’

Adventure Adviser: I admire your enthusiasm. I, too, have longed to go out into a field, armed only with a high-powered hurling device and a big, fat pumpkin or two, and just fire away. Since it’s clear your chucking fetish can’t be satisfied by, say, lobbing water balloons at your neighbor’s front porch, then it’s time for the Punkin’

For those of you who weren’t watching David Letterman when his show launched the contest into the spotlight last fall, Punkin’ Chunkin’ is held every year near Lewes, Delaware, attracting crowds of more than 20,000 people. The object: pitch a pumpkin as far as you can, using a device you’ve created. The world record was set last year, when the Mello Yello team flung a
pumpkin 2,655 feet.

It’s still a bit on the early side, Mark, but this year’s entry applications should be available by the end of August. Just call the event’s sponsor, Roadhouse Steak Joint, at 302-645-8273. While you’re waiting for that time to roll around, consider these rules: 1. Pumpkins must weigh between eight and 10 pounds. 2. Pumpkins must leave the machine intact. 3. No part of the
machine shall cross the starting line. 4. Absolutely NO EXPLOSIVES are allowed.

But there’s more to the event than just smashing pumpkins. You’ll also enjoy hot-air balloon rides, live bands, helicopter rides, and fireworks. For a peek at the 1994 event, you can even order a 10-minute video from Arden Media Resources (302-571-1754) for $29.95.

I’ll be rooting for you, Mark. Write back and let me know how it went!
