Writing to win a lake resort
Question: This isn’t really a travel question but any reply would make my day! I am interested in information on the Blue Lake Horizon Court Family Resort owned by John and Bea Mahler on the Lake Huron shoreline. They are having an essay contest to give away this beautiful resort and the information is hard to find. Any information on climbing in
Michigan and the surrounding area would be helpful as well.

Adventure Adviser: Poets take heed. If you are interested in becoming a minor land baron on the shores of Lake Huron, this contest is for you.

The owners of Blue Horizon Court Motel and Cottages in Oscoda, Michigan, feel it’s time to retire. As a result, Bea and John Mahler are putting their much-loved 16-unit resort on an auction block of sorts, awarding the entire 1.5-acre property to the savviest of wordsmiths.

The contest rules are as follows: Write a 500-word essay about why you would like the Mahler’s summer resort and what you would do with it. Send a $100 check or money order and a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Blue Horizon Court, PO Box 151, 4208 N. U.S. 23, Oscoda, MI 48750.

The essays will be held in an escrow account until the winner is announced and the resort is deeded to that person. If the entries do not reach 6,500, all entry fees will be sent back.

The contest started May 15, 1997 and will end when either a minimum of 6,500 entries or a maximum of 10,000 entries are received. If 6,500 entries are not received by November 15, 1998, all entry fees will be returned within 90 days.

The Mahlers invite any contestant to see the resort in action from June 1 through October 15. For an entry package and more detailed information, call 517-739-8487.
