Harriet Tubman, Military Pioneer
You know her from the underground railroad (and now the $20 bill), but did you know Harriet Tubman was also a pioneering military leader during the Civil War?
How Do Elk Bugle?
How does such an enormous animal make such a high-pitched sound? National Geographic explains.
Ultimate Cooler Comparo
Field and Stream went to town on the latest roto-molded coolers, even enlisting the help of a furry to hurl them off the back of a pickup going 45mph. Obviously, they still had cold beer to drink afterwards.
Andrew Skurka’s New Ultralight Tent
When ultralight masochist Andrew Skurka isn’t flagellating himself with the sawed-off ends of toothbrush handles, he’s helping Sierra Designs design a new generation of ultralight backpacking gear. The culmination of that relationship will be this new High Route 1 FL Tent that he previews on his blog. It looks exceptionally livable, but at 2 lbs 3 oz, we’re a little skeptical of its ultimate point. The Slingfin 2Lite, our current favorite backpacking tent, fits two people comfortably, doesn’t force you to carry trekking poles to set it up, and weighs just 2 lbs 14 oz.
New Jersey Is Gonna Burn
The worst catastrophic wildfire in the U.S. this year won't happen in California or Alaska, but in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. A major blaze there is apparently just a matter of time, local fire departments aren’t equipped to stop it, and it puts a huge chuck of the northeast urban sprawl at risk. Damage could be equivalent to that caused by Hurricane Sandy.
Exploring Inuit Suicides
NPR tackles the inuit suicide epidemic. It’s heartbreaking, but hopefully by discussing it, we can find a way to make it better.
World Leaders Sign Climate Change Accord
Let’s hope it achieves something. Early signs are that it’s already too little, too late.
Sony World Photography Awards
From eagle hunters in Mongolia to Astronauts on Mars, there’s some stunning imagery here.
The Most Dangerous Thing In the Office This Week
This new Kniper combines a marijuana pipe with a throwing knife, a beer opener, and several other useful tools. We’re testing it as we speak.
What You’ll Be Reading Next
At 4 a.m. this morning, Chris (our photographer), departed Long Beach, California in a folding kayak. He hopes to reach Avalon, on Catalina Island, 30 miles away, sometime this afternoon. I haven’t heard from him yet, but let’s all hope he’s safe!
