Vests are the Swiss Army knives of layering. They work in summer and winter, in town and on the mountain, for early morning dawn patrols and out for dinner. Here are six of our favorites.

Patagonia Men’s Reversible Bivy Down Vest ($132)
We dig this vest’s old-school, two-tone, 1980s design. Plus, it’s reversible, so you get two color options. Recycled 600-fill down keeps you warm, while DWR-coated nylon on each side cuts wind and resists rain.

Roark Revival Heathen Vest ($90)
Thanks to the quilted outer, this cotton vest looks good at the bar, but it’s also made to take a beating while chopping wood.

Filson Down Cruiser Vest ($375)
This vest has that classic Filson look—like it belongs on a Washington woodsman—thanks to an oiled-cotton outer. Inside, you get ethically sourced 550-fill European goose down.

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Vest ($83)
Thick, chunky fleece is back. This vest has an athletic fit and stretchy side panels, so it fits well under a jacket.

Howler Bros Camo Merlin Vest ($135)
Made for when you need to blend in (or stand out), the camo Merlin vest is packed with Primaloft insulation that works well over a T-shirt or under a shell.

Stio Hometown Down Hooded Vest ($166)
The 800-fill down makes this is one of the warmest vests we’ve ever tested. Throw in the helmet-compatible hood and DWR coating, and you might never wear sleeves again.
