The Powder 8’s Competition Shows How the Pros Ski When It’s Fresh and Deep

Text by

After a decade-long hiatus, Jackson Hole’s famous Powder 8’s competition returned last weekend. Pairs of skiers competed to create the most symmetrical figure eights while tearing down Cody Bowl just outside the ski area boundary. With one skier following the other, five judges also critiqued their timing and skiing style.

The event, which started in 1975, fell off back in the early 2000s as freeride and big mountain competitions gained popularity and synchronized skiing became passé. The resort decided to reinstate it as part of its 50th anniversary celebration, and, like many retro trends in skiing these days (think onesies, Pit Vipers) it was warmly welcomed back. Teams flew in from across the country to compete, GoPro ponied up $10,000 in prize money, and many hope there are plans to continue the competition next year.
