The founder of Stanford University's Prevention Research Center says he's found five foods with cancer fighting powers, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Dr. John Farquhar, a faculty member at Stanford's Medical School, co-teaches a class called, “The Best Diet Ever.” Here's what we learned from the Chronicle article:
A Chinese study published last year showed the more soy women ate, the less likely they would be to develop breast cancer. Farquhar recommends taking in 8-10 grams of soy protein per day. Munch on some edamame, or slurp some soy milk.
Berries have antioxidants that can help keep cell damage at bay. Eat a cup of berries per day to reap the berry benefits. Try blueberries, raspberries or boysenberries
A study published last year showed tomatoes help prevent prostate cancer. Farquhar recommends three servings of tomatoes per week for both men and women.
Broccoli or other vegetables like cabbage and kale have compounds that may help guard against colorectal cancer. A serving a day is recommended.
Onion breath should be considered a sign of good health–Farquhar recommends a serving a day from the onion family. Don't like onions? Try garlic, leeks, scallions or shallots instead.
