Caster Semenya to Return to Track

Caster Semenya, the 19-year-old South African runner, plans to return to the international stage soon, the New York Times reports. Semenya has been absent from competitions for 11 months undergoing examinations by the International Association of Athletics Federations to verify her gender.

Semenya has now been cleared to race as a woman, and, according to her coach, Michael Seme, she will do so soon in Europe. Seme explained that the goal is to work up to competing in the African championships in Kenya, which begin July 28.

''We can't go straight to a big meeting,'' Seme said, ''so we are preparing for one or two races before that.''

Semenya last raced in August 2009 in Berlin, where she claimed the world title at the 800-meter distance.
