Get in Shape: Mountain Racing Season is Coming

I hope you've been training through the winter, because it's time to start thinking about trail running again—and racing.

The dates for La Sportiva's Mountain Cup have been announced. These are 10 very cool trail running and mountain running races, scattered around the country. (Bummer: One of the fiercest races of the year, the Mt. Washington Hill Climb, is not on this year's calendar).

The nice thing is if you're fast, and you're willing to travel to a few races, you could very well win some money, without having to go head-to-head with, say, Matt Carpenter or Bernie Boettcher. Ok, you have to be very fast, and place consistently well. The way the system is scored, you win 15 points for getting a first place, 14 points for second place, etc. Last year's overall men's winner, Matt Byrne, took home $5,000 for accumulating 98 points. The female winner, Megan Kimmel, won with 115 points. That's a lot.

Even if Mt. Washington isn't on the docket this year, there are a lot of great local races, and some well known ones too. I've run the Jemez Mountain Half Marathon (May 22) in New Mexico before and really enjoyed it.

Word on the street is Byron Powell, our friend over at, is going to be covering the series on his site.
