The Route: Two weeks and 120 miles of backpacking through the Amazon rainforest, starting at the remote village of São Gabriel. The trip culminates in a steep but nontechnical climb of Pico da Neblina, Brazil’s highest mountain.

When to go: Year-round

Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous

Travel advisory: If you take the Swallows and Amazons trip, be prepared to hump a 40-pound pack with all your gear and a share of the food and cooking equipment.

High/low points:

  • Trekking through the Amazon with the Caboclos river people, who can point out the medicinal value of every tree.
  • Hanging your hammock from a tree that’s home to formiga de fogo, or stinging fire ants.
