Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt has sustained an injury to his lower back that will keep him off of the track for what remains of the season, Reuters reports. The Munich doctor who diagnosed the injury Monday said that Bolt could do damage to his hamstrings or calves without proper treatment.

“I am very disappointed to miss two of the top meetings on the circuit – Zurich and Brussels – but trust that it is better for me not to take any risks this year,” Bolt said.

Although Bolt was bested last week at 100 meters by American Tyson Gay, he still holds the world record in the event.  And Bolt has made it clear that he intends to preserve his standing at the 2012 Olympics in London.
