Aspen Avalanche Kills Skier
Victim was backcountry skiing
A skier was killed Monday by an avalanche in the Aspen backcountry, the Aspen Times reports. The victim’s name will not be released until the next of kin has been notified.
Another skier involved, who was uninjured, reported the avalanche on the west side of Aspen Mountain, below Ruthie’s Lift, at 3 p.m. Aspen Mountain Ski Patrol located the body an hour later, at about 9,400 feet, the Aspen Times reports.
Since two recent snowstorms, avalanche forecasters at the Colorado Avalanche Information Center are calling the Aspen zone’s danger rating “considerable,” which is the third highest of five categories.
“This is probably as active of a cycle as we’ve seen since a year ago,” said Blase Reardon, Aspen zone avalanche forecaster.
