Although tsunamis produced by the earthquake in Japan have raised global concern for Pacific communities, the island archipelago of Hawaii is dealing with another natural inconvenience also inherent to its location and geology: The volcano Kilauea is erupting with renewed fury, according to Surfers Village.

Kilauea has been erupting since 1983 and has incinerated 213 homes. Until the early '80s, Kilauea was dormant. Last weekend it also showed increased activity, and the most recent eruptions have brought about the closure of campgrounds and parts of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Follow Kilauea activity (eruptions, earthquakes, off-gassing) at the Hawaii Volcanoes Observatory of the United States Geological Survey.
