Six More Weeks of Winter

Punxsutawney Phil, a.k.a. Mr. Groundhog of Groundhog Day, has seen his shadow this morning in Pennsylvania, the AP reports. That means six more weeks of winter, so you’ve got plenty of time to get out there with your skis, snowboards, sleds, or any other winter sport contraption you can think of.

The groundhog tradition has been going on since 1887, when Punxsutawney Phil started becoming the meteorological figure of winter. The tradition actually goes back further, according to German lore, which says that if a hibernating animal sees its shadow on Candlemas, the Christian holiday falling on February 2, there will be six more weeks of winter.
