Pharmaceuticals blamed for contamination

The European Commission on Thursday proposed new regulations on 15 pharmaceutical drugs that scientists believe are contaminating water sources. Six drugs under consideration could be banned altogether within 20 years. In August, reports emerged that fish living downstream from a pharmaceutical plant in France were exhibiting both male and female sexual characteristics. The rules would be the first in Europe to classify drugs as environmental contaminants.
