Starting this morning at 1am, Washington State and federal authorities began searching a remote part of Orcas Island for the teen burglar known as the Barefoot Bandit—this according to San Juan County Sheriff Bill Cummings.
Dog-tracking teams and personnel from various law-enforcement agencies are swarming the area, where they have reason to believe Harris-Moore is holed up. “This is a very isolated and very rugged area where only a few homes are located. Ground and air access to the area is being controlled,” Cummings said in a statement.
Harris-Moore is believed to be behind dozens of burglaries in Washington State's San Juan Islands, where he grew up, and the theft of at least three stolen planes—most recently one that was stolen on mainland Washington and landed on Orcas last month. Bob Friel, who lives on Orcas, profiled him in December for “The Ballad of Colton Harris-Moore.”
