“You see the tiny building up there? That’s where we’ll be jumping from,” Fernando Goncalves tells me, pointing to the clouds. I can barely make out the top of the mountain, let alone the launch area he's indicating. 

The exit point is on the balcony of Aiguille du Midi, which at 12,600 feet, is the highest peak in Chamonix. People who BASE jump from here get more than two minutes of free fall, making it one of the sport's more popular spots. The best part? You get there by cable car.  

Last month, after two years of preparation, Goncalves stepped off the ledge. Fast and close to the cliff, it was breathtaking to watch as what sounded like a rehearsed “Whoa” emerged from the crowd.
