The Federal Bureau of Investigation is searching for Appalachian Trail hikers who might have information about the death of an Indiana man whose body was found on the trail in Virginia in August. In a memo released last week, the FBI said that it is seeking information on hikers known by the trail names Mr. Coffee, White Wolf, Papa Smurf, Combat Gizmo, and Space Cadet. Scott Lilly, a hiker from South Bend, went missing in Amherst County, Virginia, sometime in late July. His body was discovered in George Washington National Forest on August 12, and authorities later termed his death “suspicious.” Lilly’s death has raised the specter of a killer on the trail, though authorities say there is no evidence that other hikers are at risk. Though hikers are rarely assaulted, the Appalachian Trail has seen its share of violent crime in decades past.
