People for Bikes, an organization that promotes bike riding and increased attention to road safety, has issued its annual list of the best new bike lanes in the United States. The list highlights lanes that feature cycling-specific infrastructure, like cycling-only signals and physical barriers that protect riders from cars.

Lanes in the cities you might expect—Portland, Austin, Seattle, to name a few—are well represented. More surprising is a new lane in Memphis, a city that has seen a dramatic turnaround toward bicycle-friendliness after Bicycling magazine named it one of the worst cities for cycling in 2008. The city has added 35 miles of bike lanes in the past two years.

People for Bikes’ favorite? A new bike lane that goes one-third of a mile down Polk Street in San Francisco. It’s painted a high-visibility green and protected by curbs and planters.
