Skier Marcel Hirscher secured Austria’s first overall World Cup since 2006 with a win on Saturday in the final giant slalom race of the 2012 World Cup season in Schladming, Austria. Hirscher, 23, had broken his foot in the offseason but recovered quickly to win nine World Cup races. “I was well behind a couple of times this season. I told myself that the race today was the same as a race in January to take the pressure off,” he said. Lindsey Vonn also took the overall crown but was unable to break Hermann Maier’s 2,000-point record after losing a poll in the final women’s giant slalom.
