IOC to Suspend India From Olympics

Announcement expected later today

The IOC suspended India’s Olympic Committee earlier today after government interference with its election process, according to two anonymous officials. Despite warnings from the IOC, a New Delhi court declared that the Indian committee should follow the country’s sports code rather than the IOC code in Wednesday’s planned elections for various top spots in the committee. Suspension means that India won’t receive Olympic funding and officials will not be allowed to attend Olympic events and meetings. Athletes will not be allowed to compete for India, but the IOC, which also recently warned Brazilian officials about the slow pace of preparations for the 2016 Games, could allow them to participate under the Olympic flag. The official decision is expected to be announced later today at the end of today’s IOC executive meetings.
