In a post to his Instagram account, 11-time ASP World Tour champ Kelly Slater announced he broke two toes on his left foot and sprained the other three. The accident happened while he was surfing Fiji’s Cloudbreak, a difficult offshore break marked by a shallow reef. Slater’s board slipped up toward his foot, hyperextending his toes.
Slater will spend three weeks in a walking boot and two more weeks in physical therapy.
He still plans to compete in the year’s final ASP event, Pipeline Masters, held on Oahu’s North Shore this December. Slater is currently ranked third in the ASP rankings and has an outside shot at winning his 12th world championship.
