Netflix announced today that it has bought the rights to air Our Planet, an eight-part series from Planet Earth creators Silverback Films, set to premiere in 2019.
“Netflix is proud to be the global home for perhaps Silverback’s most ambitious project to date,” Lisa Nishimura, vice president of original documentaries for Netflix, told Deadline. “The Planet projects have enjoyed great success on Netflix and have helped launch new technologies for viewing at home.”
The four-year project will be shot in such locations as the ice caps, deep oceans, deserts, and remote forests, Deadline reports. The series will use 4K camera technology. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is providing the filmmakers access to projects in protected areas around the world.
“Our Planet is going to raise the bar for natural history landmarks,” said Alastair Fothergill of Silverback Films. “We will reveal the most amazing sights on Earth and show them in ways they have never been seen before.”
