Peissel, Himalaya Explorer, Dies at 74
Author and filmmaker suffered heart attack

Michel Peissel, a French explorer and scholar famous for his studies of Tibet and the Himalayas, died at age 74 of a heart attack on October 7th at his home in Paris. Peissel’s numerous expeditions into the Himalayas yielded 16 books, 20 documentaries, and artwork exhibited in Paris and New York. Peissel was recognized for studying the remotest regions of the world using only basic modes of transportation. “Travel with him was always a triumph over the impossible,” said his son, Olivier.
