Rasmussen Fired for Missed Doping Tests
Cyclist violates whereabouts rule
Danish cyclist Alex Rasmussen was fired by Team HTC-Highroad on Thursday after missing his third doping test in 18 months. A two-time track world champion, Rasmussen, 27, had just signed a contract with Garmin-Cervelo in the aftermath of HTC-Highroad’s collapse last month. Garmin has also terminated that agreement. Rasmussen will miss next week’s road world championships in Copenhagen and must now face a hearing in front of the Danish sports commission. Rasmussen told reporters on Thursday that the missed tests were mistakes, not intentional evasions. “Some stupid mistakes could cost me two years,” he said. The UCI requires riders to provide whereabouts information so that doping tests can be administered at any time. Missing three tests in any 18-month period can result in a two-years ban from competition.
