Running: A Chip Off the Kip
By Todd Balf (with Martin Dugard)

University of Arizona senior Martin Keino, son of Kenyan Olympic champion Kip Keino, went wire to wire to win the NCAA cross-country championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on November 21. Finding himself with a surprisingly comfortable lead midway through the 10,000-meter race, Keino breezed home in 30:08.7, 50 meters ahead of runner-up Adam Goucher, a freshman at the
University of Colorado. Unfortunately for young runners everywhere, it isn’t the last they’ll see of the Keinos, and in fact the victory may signal the start of a family dynasty. Martin, who will graduate this spring, is considered by many to be the second-best runner among the Keino offspring; younger brother Bob is a former high school national champ and a freshman at the
University of Arizona.
