Russians Abandon K2 After Climber Dies

A Russian team has abandoned plans to become the first team ever attempt to ascend K2 in winter after one of its members died in base camp on Monday. Climber Vitaly Gorelik had sustained severe frostbite on his hands two weeks ago while fixing ropes high on the mountain. He was waiting to be evacuated by helicopter when he suffered a heart attack. High avalanche danger has also forced alpinists Simone Moro and Denis Urubko to put their planned summit attempt of Nanga Parbat on hold.
