Recent shark sightings off Cape Cod have prompted officials in Chatham, Massachusetts to ban night swimming and keep swimmers away from beaches frequented by seals. Under the new moratorium, swimmers may not enter the water on east-facing beaches between sunset and sunrise. The ban also prohibits swimmers from venturing within 300 yards of seals, one of the sharks’ most common sources of food. But tourists continue to flock to Chatam—only now they’re looking for sharks and seals instead of swimming. There have been 35 great white shark sightings off Cape Cod so far this summer, an increase over past years that likely reflects a growing seal population.
