Surfing and sport climbing are still on the list of eight new sports—down from the original 26—under consideration for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games announced Monday.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) hopes to appeal to a younger generation in the 2020 Olympics, Surfline reported. Along with surfing and climbing, in the running to become new events are baseball/softball, bowling, karate, roller sports, squash, and wushu.
Next, the international federations for each of the eight sports will undergo an interview process in August with the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee. Final decisions will be proposed to the IOC in September.
