Thousands of Sharks Killed off Colombia

In sanctuary, up to 2,000 sharks dead

Biologists studying sharks in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Colombia stumbled across the slaughter of thousands of sharks in a 3,300-square-mile marine sanctuary. A team of Russian scientists saw a group of boats flying the Costa Rican flag appear near the small island of Malpelo. When the scientists investigated further they found thousands of dead hammerhead and whale sharks on the ocean floor. The sharks appeared to have been killed for their fins. Colombian and Costa Rican officials are investigating.
