U.S. Triathletes Qualify for London Games

Kemper makes fourth Olympic team

Three triathletes secured spots on the 2012 U.S. Olympic Triathlon team with top-nine finishes at the ITU World Triathlon Championships in San Diego on Friday and Saturday. Hunter Kemper, 36, clinched his fourth consecutive Olympic berth with a fifth-place finish, while Manuel Huerta nabbed the other spot on the men’s team in ninth place. Laura Bennett placed third overall to join Gwen Jorgensen and Sarah Groff, who qualified in London a year ago, on the women’s team. Kemper is one of only a handful of triathletes to Qualify for the Olympics after it was introduced in 2000. Later on Saturday, Australian Olympic-bound triathlete Brad Kahlefeldt was hospitalized with chest pains that doctors believe may indicate tuberculosis. He will not be allowed to travel until doctors reach a diagnosis.
