Congressional legislators from Utah on Thursday proposed a bill that would legalize construction of a gondola linking Canyons Resort to nearby Solitude Mountain. Under the plan, the eight-person lift would traverse a 30-acre parcel of federally protected watershed in Big Cottonwood Canyon. The project would drop travel time between the mountains, currently an hour by car, to 11 minutes and increase the resorts’ combined ski-able terrain to 6,000 acres. The idea has been hotly debated in Salt Lake City and is expected to face stiff opposition from environmentalists in Utah and Washington.
