Three-time Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn has been appointed as the first international ambassador for the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic Games in South Korea, according to the Pyeongchang Organizing Committee’s website.
“We believe that she will truly be an excellent ambassador promoting the Pyeongchang 2018 Games to the world,” committee president Yang-Ho Cho said in a statement. “She is a very famous, well-known world-class ski racer, but what I really admire about her is her passion and fearless spirit.”
Vonn, whose storied career includes gold and bronze medals in Olympic skiing, expressed gratitude and admiration at the ceremony in Seoul.
“I’m very proud and honored to be an ambassador for the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics. It’s been a great trip to Korea so far,” she said in the release. “We were able to look at the [alpine skiing] venue yesterday and everything is coming on very well. Pyeongchang 2018 is doing a great job in the preparations, so I look forward to the test events coming up in the next two years and the Olympics.”
As Outside reported last January, Vonn is likely to make an appearance in South Korea both as an ambassador and a competitor. Returning from a succession of knee injuries that kept her out of the 2014 Games in Sochi, Vonn appeared to be back in good form this past winter during the women’s downhill and the super-G at the World Cup in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, where she broke the all-time women’s record for World Cup victories. Vonn now has 67 wins to her name.
