Stage 3 of the Tour de France was temporarily delayed on Monday after a 20-bike crash occurred with more than 30 miles remaining in the 99-mile stage, according to the New York Times. Fabian Cancellara, wearing the yellow jersey, was one of cyclists caught in the crash. He abondoned the Tour after crossing the finish line and was later diagnosed with two broken vertebrae in his lower back.

Reeling in an early breakaway, the peloton was close to regaining contact when William Bonnet of FDJ clipped a wheel and fell into the line of about 20 other riders, the Guardian reported. The result was a widespread crash at 26 miles per hour that was so severe it caused race director Thierry Gouvenou to pause the race.

A break of several minutes allowed riders to seek medical attention, according to the Guardian. The race resumed with 37 miles remaining. Three cyclists immediately abandoned the Tour as a result of the crash, with one hospitalized, the Daily Mail reported.

Joaquim Rodríguez won the third stage of the Tour de France, according to the New York Times. Stage 4 begins on Tuesday.
