American downhill rider Aaron Gwin won the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup after snapping his chain immediately out of the starting gate Sunday in Leogang, Austria, Red Bull reports. This wasn’t the first time Gwin encountered mechanical trouble at a competition. At last year’s World Cup, he rode four minutes without a tire, after flattening it 10 seconds into his run.

Watch the two-time World Cup champion ride a pedal-free run for the improbable win.
