Chile’s Calbuco volcano erupted on Wednesday for the first time in 42 years.
The 6,500-foot volcano is about 600 miles south of Santiago and located near the cities of Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt. It erupted twice in 24 hours, beginning Wednesday, and is considered one of the three most potentially dangerous of Chile’s 90 active volcanoes, according to the Washington Post. Areas across southern Chile, including Patagonia, are experiencing darkened skies and falling ash.
