Backcountry Headquarters

There are plenty of sturdy and roomy four-person base-camping tents on the market. What makes the Hideaway our favorite is that, while it’s downright cavernous it’s still light enough (nine pounds) to take into the backcountry. And once there, it’s a comfy base of operations, with two huge doorways, generous pockets, and a front vestibule that can be lifted into a canopy by twin trekking poles. With 55 square feet of floor space, the four-foot-tall Hideaway was the ideal tent for one tester’s four-person family. The tall profile concerned some testers, but thanks to plenty of guylines and its large-gauge aluminum poles, the Hideaway was rock-solid in 30-mph gusts. Bonus: A gear loft and a nylon footprint are included. 9 lbs; marmot.com
