Electric Cars Too Quiet?

Electric cars may be good for the environment, but they might not be so good for pedestrians. The Washington Post reports that the cars are so quiet that they have become a potential hazard for people who don't hear them coming as they're walking on the streets. Auto manufacturers, such as Nissan, are trying to address the problem by proposing noises added into the car to alert pedestrians (e.g., chimes).

“Frankly, we've been working for 30 years to make cars quiet–neverthinking they could become too quiet,” said Robert Strassburger of the Alliance of AutomobileManufacturers.
