The word onesie didn’t always evoke high performance. Rather, it used to conjure images of silliness: footie pajamas, DIY Halloween costumes, and gaper-day ski suits. Today’s onesies, however, are as utilitarian as they are just plain fun.
Helly Hansen Ullr Powder Suit ($850)
Take Helly Hansen’s Ullr Powder Suit. When waist-deep snow is in the forecast, this is the ultimate armor. The neon orange, wind- and waterproof body shown here is reminiscent of a hazmat suit, earning chuckles and compliments in the lift line. On the hill, the seam-sealed polyester-polyurethane body eliminates the scourge of snow getting down your pants yet breathes, thanks to inner-thigh and underarm vents.
Shandoka 1Z 2.0 ($180)
Then there are the base-layer onesies, which beg to be worn from first chair to fireplace. The most stylish of the lot is the Shandoka 1Z 2.0 from Corbeaux Clothing, which doesn’t require you to look like a toddler at a sleepover. The Aspen-based brand simultaneously delivers cushy comfort and a roomy, athletic fit with the backcountry-ready piece. The Shandoka has plenty of performance chops, too, including a stretchy spandex-and-recycled-polyester fabric, an over-the-boot cut, and thumb loops for more hand coverage.
Airblaster Ninja Suit (From $110)
Still in the game is the original Airblaster Ninja Suit—the brand has been crafting onesies for over a decade. Get the Ninja Suit in polyester or upgrade to a wool blend for better moisture management. Sporting a 350-degree zipper around the waist—blessedly making calls of nature way easier—these long johns also have a seven-panel hood for a dome-cradling fit.
Patagonia Capilene Thermal Weight One-Piece Suit ($199)
For missions in teeth-chattering temperatures, wrap yourself in Patagonia’s Capilene Thermal Weight One-Piece Suit. Crafted from thick and stretchy Polartec Power Grid fabric and coated with Polygiene’s odor-quashing silver-chloride treatment, the One-Piece is warm enough for lying still during a snowy bivy, though you’ll find it wicks moisture well when you’re sweating buckets on the skin track, too.
