In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, sandal brand Chaco and watersports brand NRS have collaborated on a special-edition shoe. The Z/2 Classic sandals feature blue-and-yellow webbing designed after the iconic NRS tie-down straps, a mainstay on rafts and roof racks the world over.
The Wild and Scenic Rivers Act was established in 1968 to protect rivers with environmental, recreational, and cultural importance from being dammed. “Our company is made up of passionate rafters, whitewater kayakers, and anglers whose lives are intimately connected with water,” says Mark Deming, director of marketing at NRS. Chaco is also donating $10,000 to the nonprofit American Rivers, which is running a campaign to designate 5,000 new miles of river in honor of the act’s anniversary.
Chaco does a lot of collabs, but this might be our favorite one yet. Not only do these sandals promote environmental legislation and awareness, but they’re also a tasteful throwback sure to induce a bit of nostalgia in anyone who grew up around kayaks, rafts, or fishing boats. Within five minutes of putting them on, I ran into a friend who told me he didn’t think he ever wanted a pair of shoes more than he wanted these ones. Luckily, there’s a website for that.
