Teaching your kid to kayak can be equal parts rewarding and miserable, especially when they’re struggling to learn how to paddle in a boat that’s too big for them. That’s why we’re such big fans of Old Town’s Heron Junior Kayak, which is designed to accommodate kids 50 to 100 pounds. The Junior’s hull has a molded keel and is designed to track better and glide more efficiently with a lighter paddler inside. A large cockpit makes entering and exiting easy, and the kid-size seat should keep them comfy when they start squirming around. And should they really start to melt down, the Junior has a built-in tethering system that makes it easy to tow.
