Biking with cars is dangerous, but Lumos, founded by a pair of cyclist-engineers, is bent on reducing the risk. Their solution: a smart bike helmet that increases rider visibility on the road.Â
When it comes to protection and wearability, the Lumos looks like many other road bike helmets on the market, built with polyurethane foam and weighing less than 15 ounces.Â
But its genius is in the elegantly simple 85-LED lighting system that allows cyclists to show drivers when they’re stopping and cornering. The Lumos has a built-in accelerometer that senses when a rider brakes and then activates the helmet’s rear taillight. To indicate a turn, the rider presses a button on a wireless remote, which mounts to the handlebars. This activates the glowing arrow on either the right or left side of the helmet.  Â
Lights recharge via micro USB for 2.5 hours of continuous use.Â
