In this extra from The Alpinist, titled Dark Horse, Marc-André Leclerc and other climbers, journalists, and filmmakers talk about his quiet drive and focus as an athlete. He never cared about becoming well-known, he said, until he saw how sharing his story could encourage others to try the sport. “I was drawn to mountain-climbing books when I was a kid, and if those people never shared their stories, how would I have even known about the activity?” Leclerc recalled. “I live out these journeys, similar to the books I read that inspired me. Why not share it? It’ll maybe help people step outside that little box and keep the dream alive.”

The Alpinist, from Red Bull Media House and Sender Films, captures some of Leclerc’s biggest free-solo climbs. Stream it now on Netflix.
