‘Meru’ Wins Award at Sundance
Documentary shows climb of remote Himalayan peak

Alpinist and photographer Jimmy Chin filmed much of the 2014 documentary Meru while tacked to the 1,500-foot-tall Shark’s Fin rock wall, the final section of the 21,850-foot Meru Peak in India’s Gharwal Himalayas. On Saturday, the 2015 Sundance International Film Festival announced that the documentary won the festival’s prestigious Audience Award.
“So much love and gratitude to the audiences at Sundance Film Festival last week,” Chin wrote via Instagram. “The feeling of sitting and experiencing Meru with all of you for the first time was beyond words. Thank you for the love.”
Chin, who spoke with Outside before the film’s premiere, initially tried to climb the peak in 2008, only to be turned back by severe weather 100 meters from the summit. Despite his vow never to return, Chin set out for the summit again in 2011 with alpinists Conrad Anker and Renan Ozturk.
