Braving the cold in British Columbia
Swatch Freeride World Tour by The North Face 2013 - The best riders on the best mountains in the ultimate freeride competition - the 2012 Swatch Freeride World Tour goes into its 5th season and consists of six (6) stops in Revelstoke (Canada), Chamonix-Mont-Blanc (France), Courmayeur Mont-Blanc (Italy), Røldal (Norway), Fieberbrunn (Austria) and the final in Verbier (Switzerland).
I was on top of British Columbia's Mount Mackenzie waiting for riders to climb up before dropping in on the infamous Mac Daddy Face. Temperatures had dropped to 30-below and the low sun on the horizon created a perfect winter light. I saw this particular snowboarder walking, ghostlike, though deep snow and tried to position myself to shoot him.
The cold was a major challenge that day; my control wheels and buttons were difficult to operate with big expedition gloves. I ended up taking them off. Surprisingly, my batteries lasted through the cold, and I was able to shoot for several hours.
