A shark attacked a drowning Brazilian teen mere seconds before she could be rescued by lifeguards Monday. Bruna Gobbi, was rushed to the Restauracao hospital in the city of Recife but sadly died of her injuries.

Gobbi, 18, was visiting Recife from her hometown of Sao Paulo. The attack took place while she was swimming with her cousin, Daniele Gobbi, at Boa Viagem beach. Lifeguards saw the two struggling and began to swim towards the pair, but before they could reach her, a shark latched onto Bruna’s leg and began to pull her under. The shark eventually let go and lifeguards were able to bring her to shore.

“The rescuers came in a matter of five minutes, but to us it felt like five years,” said Daniele. “We knew there were risks of a shark attack but I thought this would occur in a deeper sector.”

58 shark attacks have been reported in Recife over the past 21 years, 28 of them fatal.
