Save big on top-rated gear like the Arc'teryx Beta SL jacket, Faction Agent 3 skis, and Big Agnes Tiger Wall tent during this year's Presidents Day sales. Whether you’re hitting the backcountry or prepping for spring treks, these are the deepest discounts our gear team has found. (Photo: Canva)
If you love to save money on gear, Presidents’ Day is underrated. Why? Well, it’s one of the only mid-winter windows to score deep discounts on outdoor gear and apparel. After Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and even secret Arc’teryx sales, there is a proverbial deals drought that lasts until the spring and summer savings events come rolling in. Now, while Presidents’ Day isn’t quite as notorious as some of those other mega sales events, it gives retailers an opportunity to clear seasonal gear off of shelves, and smart gear shoppers can snap up the subsequent savings. Needless to say, February 16th should be circled on your calendar.
To help you sift through the savings, our gear team scrutinized hundreds of Presidents’ Day and winter sales, hunting for eye-catching discounts. We were also on the lookout for gear our testers already know and love that’s currently slashed to more enticing prices. Take a peek below to check out the sales—and maybe fill those spaces in your gear closet.
Or, go straight to the sales:
Presidents’ Day coincides with Backcountry’s Semi-Annual sale, which is a major plus for gear shoppers. While many Presidents’ Day sales only last for the holiday weekend, Backcountry’s Semi-Annual sale runs until the end of February, giving you more time to shop. Seeing as there are well over 12,000 products on sale, the extra time is appreciated. You’ll find everything from backpacking and car-camping tents to backcountry skis in the mix, with some items marked down by 50 percent or more.
Not hunting for anything specific? Here are a few popular gear categories you can pick through at your leisure.
Next up? A few pieces of gear that Outside testers have already given their stamp of approval that are on sale during Backcountry’s semi-annual sale.

If you’re looking for ski goggles that deliver top-tier optics without breaking the bank, Smith’s Squad belongs at the top of your list—and that’s without factoring in the current 40-percent discount at Backcountry. We love the plush face foam, near-universal helmet compatibility, and the overall aesthetic, but the biggest selling point is no doubt the caliber of Smith’s contrast-boosting ChromaPop lenses.

High-quality, lightweight backpacking gear is usually a heavy blow to the wallet. Big Agnes’ Tiger Wall 2 Platinum Tent is no exception: it features gossamer-weight fabrics and Featherlite DAC poles, maintaining a sub-two-pound trail weight that helps justify the $650 price tag. Thankfully, Backcountry’s slashed the Tiger Wall by 25 percent this Presidents’ Day to help you get prepped for backpacking season.
When we’re digging for discounts, one of the first places we check is the REI deals page. Whether you’re looking for the REI Co-op’s famously affordable gear or equipment from premium brands like Patagonia and Arc’teryx, this clearance section is always overflowing with thousands of bargains. In fact, REI is in the middle of its big Presidents’ Day sale, and you can find a curated selection of handpicked deals from the sale here. In particular, the sale is stacked with women’s and men’s apparel up to 50 percent off.
Click the links below, and you’ll find hundreds of items on sale from these tried-and-true outdoor brands.
Below, we’ve rounded up a few favorites from REI’s current smorgasbord of sales and outlet deals. Not only do these products feature double-digit discounts, but they’ve also been given two thumbs up by our discerning gear team.

Weighing just over a pound, the Ether Light XT Insulated Sleeping Pad isn’t the lightest option in Sea to Summit’s pad lineup. However, it features an R-value of 3.2, meaning it’s well-insulated for three-season use. Best of all, it’s four inches thick, giving backpackers unmatched comfort on the trail. The nearly half-off discount will help you sleep better at night, too.

Gore-Tex and Arc’Teryx are a match made in heaven. Or at the very least, a match made in the high alpine. A perennial favorite amongst our shell test team, the Beta SL is a lightweight, three-layer, Gore-Tex shell with a bio-based face fabric and a soft C-knit-backed interior that’s comfortable against bare skin. The Arc’Teryx shell can handle rain and snow alike, and it’s now on sale by 24 percent off, although shoppers are unfortunately limited to a couple of the louder colorways.

A stylish and capable ski jacket, the Powder Town features Patagonia’s proprietary H2No waterproof and breathable membrane, giving skiers and boarders solid precipitation protection on the slopes. This particular iteration of the Powder Town is currently discontinued and discounted by 25 percent, so it’s a smart time to snag one.
Don’t forget about Evo! The outfitter’s mid-winter sale is chock-full of smashing deals. Evo is one of our go-to retailers when we’re on the hunt for anything ski, snowboard, surf, or bike-related, and the sale has thousands of pieces of gear on offer, ranging from ski outerwear that’s up to 80 percent off to mountain bikes that are up to 50 percent off.
A couple of deals jumped out at us from Evo’s mid-winter sale, most notably one of our favorite ski mitts and an Evo-branded roller bag that we’ve put through the paces on international shred trips.

Oyuki, a Niseko-based brand that was recently acquired by Evo, makes truly exceptional gloves and mittens. The Sencho, skier Pep Fujas’ pro model, is a trigger-mitt-style option crafted from premium materials. It features supple goatskin leather for durability, PrimaLoft insulation for warmth, and Gore-Tex inserts for waterproofing. You can’t go wrong with the Sencho, especially when these mitts are currently slashed by 30 percent.

Whether you’re a skier or a snowboarder, Evo’s Deluxe Snow Roller Bag gets the job done. This bag is a high-capacity workhorse, with plenty of organization features, tough materials that can handle ornery baggage handlers, and smooth-rolling wheels for pain-free airport navigation.
Last but not least, Sun & Ski Sports’ Presidents’ Day sale has some stellar deals. If you’re in the market for hardgoods like skis and snowboards, you don’t want to miss this one. You’ll also find base layers up to 60 percent off, hiking boots and footwear up to 80 percent off, and more.

Unless you have a pro deal or you’re buying used, it’s tough to find decent skis that are 40 percent off. Faction’s beloved Agent 3, a lightweight skintrack crusher with a 106mm waist that’s stout enough to rip in consequential freeride terrain, is now heavily discounted at Sun & Ski.

Last spring, Head impressed our snowboard testers with the Beam. It’s a cambered twin for everyday conditions that accommodates both aspiring intermediates and more aggressive riders who like to rail turns and boost off side hits. The retail price is more than fair when you consider the overall snowboard market, and the 20 percent discount doesn’t hurt, either.
