Good for Trails
At a mere seven-plus ounces—almost half as much as the sturdiest trail runners—this featherweight flat initially seemed like it would be too flimsy for everyday running. Even though it’s designed for elite trail racing, we midpack runners still loved its fast and incredibly spry feel. The only real structure here is underfoot, where a flexible midsole plate protected us from rock jabs and added some torsional rigidity. The minimalist upper fits like a sock; just don’t expect it to stabilize your foot much on treacherous terrain or protect it from trailside obstacles. There’s not much shoe here, but what there is impressed us. 7.4 oz; newbalance.com
