With the release of the documentary Tiny: A Story About Living Small, tiny houses have caught the public’s imagination. Should you be one of that throng but lack the basic know-how with tools to build your own miniature home, the Washington company A Room of One’s Own can build a custom space tailored to your needs.

After a period of rambling, self-taught builder and writer Charles Finn sat down at a friend’s kitchen table in Missoula, Montana, with a few bottles of beer, paper, and pencil to sketch his first home. More than ten years later and relocated to the West Coast, Finn takes orders for each “commissioned art piece,” which he then builds from reclaimed wood.

No two being the same, most houses include a bed, desk, bookshelves, wood stove for heat, two-burner propane stove for cooking, and sink with gray-water catch. Finn also throws in a pair of oil lamps and a complimentary copy of Walden to complete the Henry David Thoreau allusion.
